New Kitty is a Biter

So, its been 5 days now with the new Kitty and we have discovered that he is a biter. He likes to run up to you and bite you in the ankles and the arm. Ouch! For a little thing, he's quite an aggressive cat. I'm not sure if its because his previous owner did not treat him well. Or if he's still scared in this new environment. Its just a bit scary to come into a room, and then all of the sudden a kitty is latched to your leg. Not only dangerous to us, a danger to the other cats in the house. He keeps wanting to pounce on the other cats. Whenever he sees the cats, he pants, meows loudly and gets into attack / pounce mode.

Have any of you ever experienced this biting behavior? What is the best way to handle it?

We've never had a Meezer before. Some things we learned quickly.

1. Meezers are loud talkers.
2. Meezers are good climbers.
3. Meezers are affectionate cats.
4. Meezers are really curious cats.
5. Meezers are really really loud talkers.

Thank you everyone for giving us such great advice in our last post! We know we have a long journey ahead of us with trying to get the kitties to get along. Hopefully sooner than later!

He sounds pretty scared with all of this change if he's biting. I was a royal (*&(*(^%% when I came to live with my family. My LL thought I hated her and I hissed at her when she tried to touch me and lunged at her. We're very expressive cats as you've found out so I think you just need some more time alone and one on one. Did he live alone before? Our grandpaw meezer is a "love biter" and he goes up to bite all of the time.

Yes we talk :). A lot. Feel free to e-mail us with questions if you want!

Yep, we LOVE to talk. About anything and everything. Mom knew of a couple of cats that were biters. Mostly when they were in unfamiliar situations. Hopefully it will stop when he feels more comfortable. By the way, what is his name?

I really don't know what to say. I have a meezer story that I shared on my blog with a aggressive behaviour question too. Maybe check out our comments later and see if anycats had an ideas.

Good Luck!

We are only half meezer and 1-5 still definitely apply. Tiki is a little quieter, but she definitely talks when she has something to say. Riley pretty much talks whenever he is awake. Riley was a biter too at first. Loudly saying "Ow!" and/or tapping him on the forehead with 2 fingers helped to break him of it. Good luck!

Better a biter than what we are dealing with here with our PooPoo. Good luck to you. My mom always thought I was part meezer when she got me because I talk all the time too, and loud! My daddy calls me Loudmouth!

hopefully this is just a phase and once he adjusts to his new home the biting will stop.

I still do grab legs that go by - it's a play thing mostly. But when I was young I used to fling myself at my Mom or Dad to get them to play. Hopefully the new addition will calm a bit soon and start fitting in.

When I first came home, I lived in the spare bedroom for a couple of weeks. Pixie got to sniff at the door every day. Then, I got put in my carrier in the same room with Pixie for about an hour at a time. Then, I went in a cage, in the same room as Pixie for about an hour at a time. Then, I got to run around on the ground while Pixie stayed on the bed (I was too small to jump up on the bed). Finally, about a month later, we were allowed in the same room together with close supervision.

I have always been a biter, but usually in a playful way. I have never growled or hissed. But sometimes, I will run up to my Daddie and just bite for no reason. And I can bite hard!

I think, usually, once the order of dominance is settled, the cats will be able to peacefully coexist.

I think whoever had him previously encouraged him to play with their hands and feet.

Best wishes retraining this kitten. I hope you have a great weekend.

Meezers are the best. Of course, then I am prejudiced.

That latching on to the leg with an attack is not typical of meezers in general and I suspect that he is very scared--we are very emotional cats and we do not hide how we are feeling. He may be mad that he had have a new home too.
