Today my friend Ruth and I ventured to Chinatown for some food shopping. Dumplings and fresh fruit, yum. We also wanted to catch the Chinese New Year festivities, today is the last day of the Lion Dance parade. The Lion dances in front of storefronts and restaurants to ward off evil spirits and to bring good luck and new fortune in the new year. The Lunar new year started on Jan. 26th. And there has been celebrations everyday since.
A lot of the merchants sell these little lions as souvenirs. Aren't these kitties cute??
When Mayor Giuliani was the mayor, he made fireworks illegal in new york city. In Chinese new year's celebrations fireworks are usually used to scare away evil spirits and to awake the Chinese dragon which also brings good fortune. Since fireworks are no longer allowed, these days in chinatown, they celebrate with these large confetti "fireworks" which is a long tube that bursts out air full of confetti. As you can see, the street was filled with it.
And here are the sanitation trucks already cleaning!! The sanitation department in New York is the best.

That looks like a lot of fun. My mum loves Chinese food although she has been laying off it lately as she is trying to lose weight. She has a Chinese necklace with the sign for Rooster because she was born in the year of the Rooster!

New York City is great for having all kinds of people and all kinds of culture. Any culture that honors the cat has a good base.
