Cooling Off!

It's been blazing hot lately, in the 90s all of last week. This is how Yaffa likes to cool off, she only sits like this when it's hot, hot, hot! I forgot to mention in my last post that it was my 600th post! So exciting!

A Cute Visitor

Last Sunday, we had a visit from our cousin, Chenzy the chihuahua. He is such a cutie. All the cats were afraid of her. They all hid! Isn't she so cute in the car? She sits in the front seat and secured with a seat belt! Absolutely adorable.

Watching, waiting

This is Sebastian watching me break up the cardboard so we can either put it out into recycling or dispose some of it into the compost. Sebastian likes to watch me carefully, and when I'm not paying attention, he likes to claim one of the cardboard pieces for himself.

Coolest Slippers Ever!

I got these cool slippers as a birthday present from my brother and his wife. I thought it was hysterical, when you wear them around the house it picks up dirt and dust. Since I have hardwood floors through-out, it's perfect. Now here is the big question... do they make miniature feline versions that I can put on all 3 cats, then my house would be spotless!!

Guess what we found today in the backyard?

Nope, it's not a mousie! But it's just as small! Today, dad bean was working out in the backyard and he saw something black running back and forth near the fence. He went over to investigate, it was a mole!!

Moles like to dig holes, so dad bean grabbed a bucket and scooped it up and carried it over to the woods behind our property and released the little guy. Dad bean said, "we don't want this little bugger digging up holes all over the property." Dante kitty was watching us from the window. He was giving dad bean this face, "can I have it please, daddy?" No Dante, he's going back to the woods. Awww, shucks!

Cardboard for Compost

I was cutting up cardboard to put in the compost this weekend, but Sebastian had other ideas for the cardboard. Haha

Happy Father's Day: Dad's will like this one!

For father's day, I thought I post some photos of dad bean's new "toy". He saw this car at a Brooklyn junk yard, and he called me one day to say he had to have it. At first, I was not thrilled about the idea, but daddy bean does work very hard. We have so many projects around the house, what's one more? Besides, it is awfully cool!!
The car doesn't "run". The engine starts, but it barely moves. That's why they had to bring it to our house on a flat bed truck. At least it's a good looking car!

Update: For those who were wondering, it's a 1955 Ford.

New favorite nap spot

Sebastian always finds new places to take a nap. His favorite spot lately is to nap on the soft new rug. Any time of day, you can be found sleeping on it.

84 year old letter!

Yesterday when my husband was working up in the attic taking out more floor boards he found something so interesting and cool! He found an old letter that was postmarked 1926!! The letter was written to a person named Julius (the previous owner I'm guessing) and it talked about not being able to go to the "city" until Saturday because that's when he get's paid. The letter said for Julius to bring his red scarf that night and to give it a good wash. They were planning a night out in Manhattan, so neat!

Also, I started a new gardening blog. The cats were getting annoyed that the blog was veering off onto another topic, sorry kitties! So please visit us here to read about our urban gardening adventure!

Recycling old wood beams, going greener!

We're still doing work in the attic. Currently, we are pulling up the old floor boards so that we can eventually insulate in between the floor beams. This takes a lot of work and a lot of banging noise, the cats don't like that much.
Our house was built in 1901, and these boards are 109 years old! All these old floor boards are being re-used not as floors but as.....
FURNITURE!! Daddy bean has been working so hard on this project, he carefully takes the old floor boards, cut them, sand them and made them into this tool bench! He said, every tool bench needs a good peg board to hold all his tools. That's exactly what he did.
The basement is his new happy place. LOL

Foam Insulation

A few months ago, the cats were hiding from these people. We had contractors come in to insulate the attic. They brought in this large tube, and blew foam in between the wood beams on the underside of the roof. It made a loud noise, so the cats were pretty scared. They were glad when they left. We feel a big difference in the temperature!

Yes, We are on the table, so what?

The cats are not allowed on the dining room table but when we are ready to go to bed, they sneak up there! One time I came back down the stairs to get a drink and look at what I saw! Bad kitties!

The best place to sit on the Lazy Boy.

Yaffa loves the lazy boy, but she doesn't sit on the seat, she likes a better spot.

We also got some great reviews of our rain barrel from our last post. Some bloggers expressed interest in getting one. This is where we bought it from. Highly recommended and shipping is only $10!

Conserving Water + Growing Garden

When we received our first water bill from the city we were shocked to find out that for 6 months, it cost us $600! Most of the water bill was the sewer part, but it got us thinking that we should do more to conserve water. So.... we bought a rain barrel. The rain barrel catches the run off water from the gutters off the roof. We use rain to water the plants! So far, it has rained twice and we have collected 80 gallons of water! Woot, woot! Not only do we feel great about saving money, we also feel awesome about conserving water! So much that we are buying a 2nd rain barrel!

Here is a recent photo of the garden. On the left are the green beans. Then the next two rows are the potato plants. We are growing red potatoes, white potatoes and Yukon gold. Yummy!

Success! Our first harvest!

It's our first year ever having a garden, and it's been a lot of hard work. We know very little about gardening, everything we know is from what our parents taught us growing up in the subarbs. However, for the last 6 years, we've lived in Brooklyn, with no access to gardening except for our window sill. But now we have a yard and it's been an adventure. It was a lot to learn. We had to remove the sod, till the earth, build a fence, but at long last, we have success! Our first vegetable harvested! We got 7 whole radishes!
How exciting it was for us to actually pull the radishes out of the ground.

Upon doing a Google search, we learned that the radish greens are also edible!! Score, 2 vegetables for the price of one! We sauteed the greens and they are indeed delicious!!
