On this day, we remember all the troops now and in the past who have sacrificed for the love of their country. For all those brave soldiers, we say thank you.
We picked up some new American flags for our flower bed. We also have flowers that we planted in red, white and blue in celebration of Memorial Day and for later in the summer, July 4th.

Something to Aspire to
Yesterday, we went to the Brooklyn Botanical Garden for my birthday. I wanted to go to get some inspiration for our garden. Boy were we inspired! The flowers are breathtaking. These photos really do not do it justice! I can't wait until next year to plant some more roses, peonies, and other perenials.
These are giant poppies we saw. They are so large, it was the size of softballs.
This is the rose garden. Absolutely spectacular! Some roses were as big as my head!
We saw some neat animals too, like this family of turtles.
And in the pond were these giant Koi, some were even bigger than Dante!
There is a birdie in this photo, can you see it?

Sitting Where We are Not Allowed
The other day, I caught Sebastian and Yaffa sitting on the bench of the dining room table. They were enjoying the sun rays coming in through the window. They know they are not allowed on the dining room table. There are a few places that is not allowed, and they all have to do with where we beans eat. They are not allowed on the kitchen counters and especially the dining room table. That's because they shed like crazy and they leave their fur everywhere, not at all appetizing. So when I saw them on the bench of the table, they both gave me that look. You know that look. ;)

Grapevine
More from our garden. The Grapevines are growing really well. When they were shipped to us, they were little sticks with no leaves. And now, they are growing really well! We have 4 different kinds of grapes, a concord grape, a pink seedless grape, a cayuga green grape, and a dark purple glenora grape. Since this is the first year that we planted the grapes, we won't get any fruit this year. Maybe next year we'll get something sweet and delicious!

More from our Garden!
The garden has been taking off pretty well. We did have our bumps, like something eating the leaves off our tomato plants. But here are some plants that are doing well.
The radishes are almost ready to be harvested! Today we saw our first green bean sprouting out, so exciting!

Roses and more flowers!
We bought these rose bushes from Walmart for $6. We didn't know how well these kinds of roses would grow, but for $6, we figured, what the heck, we'll try it. I'm happy to report, that the roses already have blooms! It's been 2 months since we planted the "stick" bare roots. They literally were sticks with roots when we brought them home. Now, the are lush with greens and flowers. Worth ever penny! Look how pretty!
Also, when we built the picket fence around the garden, we weren't sure if we should trim down the tall fence posts. Then a friend of ours gave us this great idea to put hanging baskets on the posts! What a great idea! We did a patriotic theme of red, white and blue flowers!

Garden is Growing
We are so excited that the garden is growing well. At least most things are. We did have a problem with 3 of our tomato plants, something has been eating the leaves off the plants! Someone told us to put cayenne pepper on the leaves and it will deter squirrels and chipmunks from eating it. Does anyone know if this works, or has any other ideas for detering furry things from eating the plants?
This is our first year ever having a garden so it's trial and error for us. It's a lot of work, but we are having lots of fun.
Here is the row of potato plants. It's doing really well!
Here is the row of radishes. They are really taking off!

A Lovely Gardenia
My sister gave me an early birthday present. A Gardenia plant! I've never had one before, they are beautiful and smell amazing! My sister wants me to plant it outside, but I prefer to keep it indoors. I hope it will grow indoors. Does anyone know if Gardenia plants can do well inside?
Isn't this gorgeous?

More garden photos!
Yesterday, we only had one bloom on this hibiscus plant. Today, we have 4! How pretty!
Here is a photo of the "big bird" we have in our garden. It was a gift from my brother-in-law. Supposedly, it's suppose to scare away the squirrels, mice and birds. Apparently, it doesn't scare anything, since we still have critters eating our plants!!! The neighbor's dog barks at it, but that's about it, D'oh.

Spring finally!
We've had lots of terrible weather lately. Rain storms, thunderstorms, 35mph wind / rain storms. But finally it's starting to feel like spring! We bought this hibiscus plant from Home Depot and it's been flowering every day! It's too bad that the flowers only really last one day, but boy are they pretty!
